Becky was a Godsend. We had interviewed with another doula, but due to the busyness of life, we did not send our confirmation soon enough and the other doula was no longer available. We asked around for recommendations and someone gave us Becky’s name. We called her and despite the short notice — and despite the fact that my due date was during the holidays (December 26th) — she was willing to take us on.
Since we didn’t have a lot of time, she rushed to do all the things that she would normally do with an expectant mother. She spoke with my husband and I about our ideal labor, helped us create a birth plan, talked through pain management techniques, etc. As we approached (and then passed) our due date, Becky recommended a variety of things to help prepare my body for birth and move things along.
I don’t know what we would have done without Becky. It was so wonderful for both my husband and I to have someone else to talk to besides our doctors or nurses. Someone I could call and discuss things with — both before, during, and after labor. And of course, during labor, Becky was indispensable. She helped guide us through, step by step, suggesting positions to move things along, methods for reducing pain, encouragement when I wanted to scream or quit. And when the baby was finally born, Becky made sure she latched and that breastfeeding got off to a good start. Becky’s calm, gentle presence helped reassure both myself and my husband. If she hadn’t been there, we would have spent much of our time alone, trying to figure things out together, a little lost and probably a little scared. Thanks to Becky, we were able to focus on managing the labor as best we could, instead of spending energy feeling worried or unsure of what to do.
As my husband likes to say, “You can’t coach a game you’ve never played.” But Becky could. And she did. And we are so grateful to her! – Carrie McClain
“Becky was great! I wound up having a C-section so I never was able to labor, but Becky was great with prenatal visits and helping with emotions associated with my complications. She was also VERY helpful in helping my husband with the baby while I was getting sewn up.” – Kelly McLaurin
“As first time parents, we had no idea what to expect and were so thankful to have Becky as our doula. Throughout my pregnancy when I had a question, she was easily available through Facebook , texting, or over the phone. She is educated in the birth process and made me feel empowered and confident to make informed decisions that lead to the natural birth of our son. During labor, Becky was constantly by my side giving me one-on-one attention when our midwife and nurses were busy and not available. When having a contraction, her calming effect and encouraging words kept me going when I was ready to give in to the pain. Overall, having a doula was a positive and beneficial experience and I would recommend using a doula to my friends or for myself again in the future.” – Caroline Cater
“As a first time father, it was nice to have Becky there to take some of the pressure off me. She reminded me of ways I could help ease the pain and was there when I needed a minute to eat or visit with family. She did not take over my role, but helped support me throughout the process. Having Becky as our doula helped relax me, which in turn relaxed mom.” – Seth Potts
